Learning about refills, renewals, and expired prescriptions
If you’ve received your first supply of medicine by now, then you’ve probably followed up with a refill or renewed prescription. But did you wonder what it means when you see the status of your prescription as having refills available, vs. needing a new prescription?
We’ll go through the difference between refilling and renewing a prescription, how you can quickly and easily do both and what happens if your prescription expires.
What’s the difference between refills and renewals?
Depending on your illness and the medicine you’re receiving to treat it, you may receive a prescription from your prescriber that includes refills. That means when your medicine supply gets lower, you can order a new supply of your medicine without having to request a new prescription from your doctor or health provider.
Some prescriptions don’t come with refills. This can be because a prescriber feels you only need a certain amount of medicine to return to full health or because he or she wants to monitor how the medicine works for you.
Refills and renewals with Humana Pharmacy are similar, but they are processed differently, so it’s important to understand the distinctions between the 2.
If you’re renewing a prescription, we’ll reach out to your prescriber for a new one. Please allow up to 6 business days for the prescriber to either respond electronically or fax us a new prescription. If we haven’t heard back from your doctor or health provider, we’ll notify you by phone or email, depending on your communication preference. When this happens, it’s important that you contact your prescriber directly or your renewal request may be cancelled.
How to refill and renew a prescription with Humana Pharmacy
If you choose to refill by signing in, use your Humana Pharmacy or MyHumana username and password and follow the on-screen prompts to refill your prescription on your dashboard. If you see that a medicine has a refill available or needs to be renewed, select “Refill” or “Renew” on the specific prescriptions you’d like. When you’re ready to submit your order, the button that once said “Refill” or “Renew” will change to “Checkout,” and you can select that to move to the next stage. In the checkout process, you’ll be able to review your order, your shipping and billing addresses and payment methods before submitting your refill order.
With the use of your smartphone, you can refill or renew a prescription. Download the Humana Pharmacy mobile app for Android and iOS and any refills or renewals available will appear on the home screen after you sign in. Select the medicines you want to refill or renew and then select “Add to cart” at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can review your order and submit.
Email and text message
If you’ve updated your communication preferences to receive refill reminders, we will send you an email or text message to remind you that you can refill or renew 1 or more of your prescriptions. In email, all you have to do is select the refill button in the email to start a refill or renewal request. When you receive a text message reminder, simply reply to the message with “YES” to begin a refill order or renewal. You can also select the link in the text message to sign in at HumanaPharmacy.com and complete the order there.
What if my prescription is expired?
If you have a prescription that has recently expired, don’t worry! If you’d like to refill an expired prescription online, sign in to your Humana Pharmacy account, go to the expired prescription on the home page and select “Renew.” Once you select that, we will reach out to your doctor or healthcare provider for confirmation. If there are any delays, we will let you know. From there, it may take 7 to 10 business days once we hear from your prescriber before your medicine arrives at your home.
If you want to remove expired prescriptions from your dashboard, you can archive them. You can do this over the phone or at HumanaPharmacy.com. If you sign in and go to “My Prescriptions,” you can select the medicine you’d like to archive. On the prescription details page, select “Archive prescription” and it will be moved to our archived files. You can always unarchive the prescription by going to “Archived prescriptions” under the “My Accounts” drop-down menu.
Amount in a mail-delivery order
Humana Pharmacy generally fills prescriptions with a 90-day supply of medicine, providing you with the convenience of only needing a refill or a new prescription every 3 months. However, if you are filling a prescription for a Schedule II controlled substance, you will likely only receive a 30-day supply or less due to federal regulations. Schedule II prescriptions also require you to either mail us your written prescription each time you need a new one or have your prescriber send us the prescription electronically.
